| We have now left Pit 1 and entered Pit 3. Four pits have been opened so far. Pit 4 was empty, believed to have been left incomplete at the time of the First Emperor's death and not finished by his son. This doesn't sound like there was unending labor thrown at the project. Perhaps there was some special purpose for the space that we do not yet understand.
Pit 2 has more chariots, kneeling archers and battle formations. Pit 3, shown above and on the subsequent pages was built in a square U shape. It contains 68 warriors and one chariot. It is the only pit that didn't suffer fire damage. Many of the soldiers don't have heads and there is indication that the pit had been "visited" in modern times by souvenir hunters. At least one head was returned to the museum by a farmer who had taken it as a souvenir years previously. |
