| Music
This is another example of tri-colored glazed pottery 三彩 (sāncǎi). Music was important from early times in Chinese rites and rituals. During the Tang Dynasty it became part of the fabric of life and was written for popular consumption in addition to the formal rituals of the court. One of the main reasons for this was the introduction of new music from the West through Buddhism and Islam. Music was heard at fairs and temple celebrations and foreigners who visited had their own folk music. These melodies entered the mainstream of Chinese music and were adapted to traditional Chinese instruments Gradually new themes for Chinese music emerged. This music then moved to the local market with traveling musicians going from town to town to perform at Saturday markets or wherever people would gather. |
