Shanghai Museum 上海博物馆

The Shanghai Museum 上海博物馆 (Shànghǎi Bówùguǎn) is located in the People's Square adjacent to the People's Park on what was once a race course and recreation ground. One of the better looking new buildings in Shanghai, the museum was designed to recall the traditional ceremonial bronze "ding" vessel. The round top symbolizes heaven while the square bottom stands for the earth.

Two men deserve credit for the quality of the museum, the director Ma Chengyuan and vice-director Wang Qingzheng, who not only oversaw the building of the present museum but grew and guarded the collection through the second half of the twentieth century. The present site of the museum opened in 1996, setting a new standard for preservation and display.
