Jiangnan 江南 - West of Shanghai, near Suzhou

This is a traditional fishing boat and thatched hut. The canal system supplemented a labyrinth of small streams and rivers that honeycomb the Yangtse delta region. Fresh water fishing has supplied not only the local economy but much of eastern China through hundreds of years. Traditional fishing methods achieved a balance with stocks, but in recent years, aggressive stocking has been necessary to maintain fish populations. Pollution is also a threat to this man's livelihood and to one of the major sources of protein on the Chinese dinner table.
