Lanterns

The light from lanterns hung in the eaves would be reflected off the lightly painted wood in the ceiling to the area below. The curve of the ceiling would have helped distribute the light to a wider area below. When viewing the building from the outside, the latticework would have created a variation of the light patterns seen from the inside during the day; a more subtle tracing than the neon we use today.
