| The Grand Rockery was originally designed by Zhang Nányáng in the Ming Dynasty. It reaches 46 feet and the pavilion at its apex was once the highest point in Shanghai. Perhaps it is the first of a long line of "tallest" structures in Shanghai. It is called the Pavilion for Viewing the River and once had a clear view of the Huangpu River.
Tons of rock were brought in and cemented in place with rice glue mixed with limestone. The yellow rocks are very rare and had to be brought from Wukang in Zhejiang Province.
