| The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong 毛主席纪念堂 (Máo Zhǔxí Jìniàntáng) sits in the center of Tian'anmen Square on the site of an ancient ceremonial gate which was called the Great Ming Gate, Great Qing Gate, or the China Gate, depending on who was in power. The gate had stood over the road from Tian'anmen Gate to Zhengyangmen. It was a stone archway, not another elaborate multi room gate such as Zhengyangmen. It was torn down in the 1950s when Mao Zedong ordered the creation of Tian'anmen Square. Russian advisors planned a huge open expanse like that of Red Square. A similar huge square was created in Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia by Russian consultants.
The lines to view the remains of Mao Zedong twist around the square even on a rainy day. The devotion for Mao Zedong is deep. The body of Mao Zedong is preserved in a crystal coffin. He lies in state draped by the flag of China.
