Jin Mao Tower 金茂大厦 is for the moment the tallest building in Shanghai and in China. That will change in 2008 when the Shanghai World Financial Center 上海环球金融中心 is finished.
For the moment, including the spire, 420.5m is the record to beat. The Jin Mao has 93 floors and 3 basement levels. Begun in 1994 and finished in 1998 it was designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of Chicago. One of the coolest features of the building is pictured below. The top floors surround a hollow leading down to the lobby of the Shanghai Grand Hyatt. Notice the grand piano? It's on the 53rd floor, taken from the 88th floor. |
