Shanghai Bund 上海滩

The Bund with Maps

The central area of the Bund taken from the Jin Mao Tower. The previous image gave you the key to the buildings, now you can see if you can match them. Here is a list of the buildings in the order in which they were built:

They aren't all in this picture, so it makes it a real challenge.

1886 China Merchants Bank
1901 Russo-Asiatic Bank
1901 China Merchants Steamship Company
1906 Palace Hotel
1907 Bangkok Bank
1910 Shanghai Club
1916 Asiatic Oil Building
1920 Yangtze Insurance
1922 Jardine Matheson
1921 North China Daily

1922 Union Insurance
1923 Chartered Bank
1923 Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank
1924 Bank of Taiwan
1925 Nishin Navigation Company
1924 Yokohama Specie Bank
1927 Customs House
1929 Cathay Hotel
1937 Bank of China
1948 China Bank of Communications

Below are two maps that I found after I finished researching these buildings. Isn't that always the way? One is from 1912 and the second is from 1933.

Map of Shanghai 1912

The two maps shown here bracket the building boom of the early 1900's. The 1912 map does not show all structures, just the primary buildings. Notice the difference in the size of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and the Customs House between 1912 and 1933.

The map shown above is from Madrolle's Guide Books: Northern China, The Valley of the Blue River, Korea. Hachette & Company, 1912. The map below was created by the US Army map service from the 1933 municiple plan of Shanghai. Both maps are courtesy of the University of Texas Libraries, The University of Texas at Austin.
