							<td><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The suspicion of Soviet intentions and the growing desire to be independent was heightened by the Cultural Revolution which began in 1964. The Cultural Revolution was an outgrowth of the rectification campaigns that Mao Zedong had initiated in 1941 to spread his version of communist theory and consolidate his power. In 1964, he had developed a corpus of political thought independent of Marxist-Leninist ideology: the Little Red Book. Those sympathetic to the Soviet brand of Communism soon found themselves in trouble.</font></td>
