This violence wasn't limited to religious symbols, but included almost anything historical or reminiscent of the dynastic past. Any sign of wealth or bourgeois values was suspect and a target for destruction. The local and central governments were able to protect selected sites. Jade Buddha Temple was one of these. Most of the monks went into hiding, but a few brave men remained to keep the temple occupied. It was untouched.</FONT></td>
