51. and was incorporated into the Ming defensive walls. Again, this gate was fortified in 1436 in the first year of the Zhengtong emperor in the early years of the Ming Dynasty. The gate was surrounded by an enclosure topped by an arrow tower. The gate earned a nickname during the Ming and Qing dynasties and was called "Liangmen", 粮门,because grain and other goods from the south were transported to the city through this gate. "Liang" means grain. The grain merchants, warehouses, and clearning houses were centered at the gate to make the transfer and trade in grain more convenient. -- City Wall Relics Park sign.
