- Ren Yi </font><font size="-0" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">任颐</font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> (1840-1895)<br>
- Seal script<br>
- Ren Yi is the foremost of the "Four Rens", the other three being: </font><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><a href="../../SMpainting/images/DrumAndZither/DrumAndZither.html">Ren Xiong</a>, Ren Xun, and Ren Yu. They<br>
- were located in Shanghai and were exposed to western influence and new ideas. They were members<br>
- of the "Shanghai School" but many of them came from Zhejiang Province as did Ren Yi. This position as<br>
- outsiders in Shanghai gave them a greater sensitivity to the effects of imperialism and to the abuses of <br>
- the Qing administration. Ren Yi was particularly aware of the disparity of position between the ordinary<br>
- man and those in power.</font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br>
