						Scholarship was based on the Confucian classics.  A social tradition developed around the study of the classics, <br>
						emphasizing memory of quotations and interpretations.  This carried over to the study of poetry and literature.  <br>
						Scholars would challenge one another with citations and allusions, often composing poetry on the spot.<br>
