-
Tomb 29 is pictured above and Tomb 87 is pictured below. Both tombs show individual burials with the corpse extended full length, arms at their sides. This is the normal grave site at Banpo. Seventy-one of the graves had pottery containers of grain or other items. At one of the sites, the individual had been buried with a belt of sixty-three bone disks. There was also a jade ear pendant near his left shoulder. Many of the graves contained small bottles of fine clay red ware with designs painted on them. The corpses were buried in an east-west direction with their heads to the west. When the same pattern is found repeatedly, it is thought that the culture has created norms and beliefs that support those norms and behaviors. Finding different types and numbers of burial objects in the tombs further suggests a that the people differentiated between those with wealth and or power; those at the top of a hierarchy. But it could have been that some people were just liked better than others and so their friends all brought contributions to the funeral.
