			<td><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">On the western end of Nanjing Road, you will find the People's Park,  人民公园 Renmin Gongyuan. In the early morning retired people come here to relax and meet their friends. The park isn't crowded.  On this morning a group of visiting Japanese photographers taking pictures of hatching fish comprised the majority of visitors. </FONT>
						<p><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">As of 2006, 11 percent of China's population was over 60 years of age according to UN statistics. By 2050 that figure will be about 31 percent if the present trends continue. In most jobs women can retire at 55 and men at 60. One reason for an early retirement age is to make room for young people in the workforce, but </font><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">that may change as the economy grows. Even today, many retirees start a second job or work part-time to supplement their income. The population is ageing.  Ten percent of those over 60 are over 80, while in 2050 it is estimated that 23 percent of retirees will be over 80 (United Nations, <a title="United Nations Population Ageing Report 2006" href="http://www.un.org/esa/population/publications/ageing/ageing2006chart.pdf" target="_blank">Population Ageing 2006</a>). The question is whether China can maintain enough growth to support its ageing population, while it simultaneously pursues a reduced or sustainable population level.<br>
