  35. <td><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In 1990, if you wanted to go to Pudong you had a choice of two tunnels or a ferry. In 1991 the Nanpu Bridge linked Puxi to Pudong. It is a cable-stayed bridge with a center span of 1,387.79 feet (.2 miles or 423m) between the two main pylons and a total length of 5.185 miles (8346 m). The center pylons reach a height 492 feet (150 m). The bridge was designed by Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute and Buckland &amp; Taylor Ltd. </font><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">One of the great features of the bridge is the circular approach used on the Puxi side to minimize the amount of land used by the bridge approach. </font>
  36. <p><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In 1991, daily traffic averaged 15,000 to 17,000 vehicles a day, by 2006 that had grown to 120,000 vehicles per day. Bridging the Huangpu river was a necessary first step in the development of the Pudong district. The Nanpu bridge was the first of several planned to open the Pudong district. The next bridge was the Yangpu shown on the next two pages.</font></p>
