As a consequence there will be strong incentive to maintain the village and resist the urge to create a mini-Shanghai. But there are other pressures that must also be handled. Another nearby village, Zhouzhuang, has commercialized to such an extent that it is difficult to see the architecture under the glitz. It is very popular. People like glitz. Tongli attracts a different segment of the tour trade, the type that would not stay long in Zhouzhuang. </FONT></td>
