12.
Adverbs 就 and 才 with time words and numbers

 13.
The adverbs 就 jiù and 才 cái serve many functions in sentences,
 14. and this section will

 15.
introduce two particular usages. 就 jiù and 才 cái should be
 16. placed before verbs in

 17.
sentences. The use of 就 jiù or 才 cái expresses the notion that
 18. the timing of an event is

 19.
earlier or later than expected. Let us look at how these
 20. adverbs are used in the following

 21.
sentences.

 22.
小

 23.
丁 今 天 八 点

 24.
睡 觉 了。

 25.
Xiăodīng jīntiān bā diăn shuìjiàole

 26.
Xiao Ding went to bed at eight o’clock.

 27.
The above sentence relates the fact that the action of going
 28. to sleep happened at eight o‟clock,

 29.
but by using the adverb 就 jiù, the sentence becomes:

 30.
小

 31.
丁 今 天

 32.
八 点 就 睡 觉 了。

 33.
Xiăodīng jīntiān bā diăn jiù shuìjiàole

 34.
Xiao Ding went to bed (as early as) eight o’clock.

 35.
As you can see, the adverb 就 jiù is placed before the verb 睡
 36. shuì to sleep in the above

 37.
sentence. 就 jiù is used to comment on the preceding time
 38. expression 八点 bā diăn eight

 39.
o’clock, and indicates that it was earlier than the speaker
 40. expected. In other words, the speaker

 41.
is expecting Xiao Ding to go to sleep after eight o‟clock.

 42.
小

 43.
丁 今 天 八 点 才 睡 觉。

 44.
Xiăodīng jīntiān bā diăn cái shuìjiào

 45.
Xiao Ding only went to bed at eight o’clock. (Lit Xiao Ding
 46. went to bed as late as eight

 47.
o’clock.)

 48.
The adverb 才 cái implies “only then”. In other words, the
 49. speaker is expecting Xiao Ding to

 51.
2011

 52.
go to sleep before eight o‟clock. Notice that in addition to
 53. the adverb 就 jiù being replaced

 54.
by 才 cái, the end of sentence particle 了 le has also
 55. disappeared in the above sentence.

 56.
就 jiù or 才 cái can also be used to express a view on a number
 57. that is smaller or bigger than

 58.
expected. Let us see the effect that the adverbs 就 jiù and 才
 59. cái have on the following

 60.
sentences.

 61.
他 用

 62.
两

 63.
个 小 时

 64.
作 了 一顿 中

 65.
国

 66.
菜。

 67.
tā yòng liăng ge xiăoshí zhuò le yídùn zhōngguó cài.

 68.
He took two hours to cook a Chinese meal. (Lit He used two
 69. hours....)

 70.
The adverbs 就 jiù and 才 cái are not used in the above
 71. sentence. The sentence only states

 72.
the fact that it has taken him two hours to cook a Chinese
 73. meal. However, if 就 jiù is added to

 74.
the above sentence, it becomes:

 75.
他 用

 76.
两

 77.
个 小 时 就 作

 78.
了 一顿 中

 79.
国 菜。

 80.
tā yòng liăng ge xiăoshí jiù zhuò le yídùn zhōngguó cài.

 81.
It only took him two hours to cook a Chinese meal. (Lit It
 82. took him as little as two hours to

 83.
cook a Chinese meal.)

 84.
就 jiù is used to comment on the preceding period of time 两个小时
 85. liăng ge xiăoshí two

 86.
hours. The speaker thinks that two hours is a short length of
 87. time. However, if 才 cái is used

 88.
instead, as demonstrated below, the sentence has a different
 89. implication, although the

 90.
meaning is similar.

 91.
他 用

 92.
两

 93.
个 小 时

 94.
才 作

 95.
了 一顿 中

 96.
国

 97.
菜。

 98.
tā yòng liăng ge xiăoshí cái zhuò le yídùn zhōngguó cài.

 99.
He only finished cooking a Chinese meal after two hours. (Lit
 100. It took him as long as two

 101.
hours to cook a Chinese meal.)

 102.
By using the adverb 才 cái in the above sentence, the speaker
 103. shows that he thinks that the

 104.
preceding two hour period of time is of short length. The
 105. sentence implies that it took him as

 106.
62Elementary Chinese Grammar 基础汉语语法

 107.
2011

 108.
long as two hours to cook the meal.

 109.
When using the adverbs 就 jiù and 才 cái, one must remember the
 110. following points.

 111.
1. 就 jiù and 才 cái must be placed before verbs

 112.
2. 就 jiù or 才 cái can be used to comment on preceding time
 113. words and number words

 114.
which are earlier and smaller or later and larger than
 115. expected.

 116.
3. The end of sentence particle 了 le is not used when 才 cái is
 117. used.
