9.
The 把 (bǎ) sentence is a useful structure for
10. focusing on the result or influence of an action. It's really
11. common in Mandarin, but can feel a bit strange for English speakers
12. at first.

13.
What is a 把 sentence?

14.
A basic sentence in Mandarin is formed with a
15. subject-verb-object (SVO) <a href="word_order" title=
16. "wikilink">word order, as in English:

17.

18.
Subj. + Verb Phrase + Obj.

19.

20.
A 把 sentence shakes things up a bit, and you get this
21. structure:

22.

23.
Subj. + 把 + Obj. + Verb Phrase

24.

25.
Note that the object has moved, and is preceded
26. by 把. You now have SOV word order.

27.
This is all well and good, but most students of Chinese, on
28. learning about 把 sentences for the first time, have the same
29. reaction: "Why the hell would I ever use this structure? The
30. SVO word order always works just fine, right?" The answer is:
31. well, no... not always. It's true that 把 sentences are often used
32. to achieve somewhat subtle differences in emphasis, but there are
33. also very good reasons to use 把 sentences when a regular sentence
34. just won't do. Take this sentence for example:

35.

36.

37.
你 把 书 放 在 桌子 上 。<span class=
38. "expl">"Put the book on the table."Nǐ
39. bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.

40.

41.

42.
How would you say this without the 把 construction? You might try
43. this:

44.

45.

46.
你 放 书 在 桌子 上 。Nǐ fàng
47. shū zài zhuōzi shàng.

48.

49.
The only problem is that the above sentence is not grammatical.
50. You can't put an object right after a verb, and then put other
51. modifiers of the verb after the object. Here are other examples of
52. how to successfully use 把 and 放 in the same sentence.

53.

54.
她 把 手机 放 在 包 里 了。"She put the phone
55. in the bag."Tā bǎ shǒujī fàng
56. zài bāo lǐ le.

57.
请 把 钱 放 在 桌子 上 。"Please put the
58. money on the table."Qǐng bǎ
59. qián fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.

60.
你 是 不 是 把 衣服 放 在 办公室 了?"Did you put
61. your clothes in the office or not?"Nǐ
62. shì bu shì bǎ yīfu fàng zài bàngōngshì le?

63.

64.

65.
把 Sentences with Two
66. Objects

67.
The usual structure for 把 sentences, as described above, puts
68. the object right after 把 for certain verbs, however, you can have
69. two objects in a 把 sentence. Their use in a 把 sentence will also
70. involve <a href="prepositions" class="uri" title=
71. "wikilink">prepositions.

72.
They use the following structure:

73.

74.
Subj. + 把 + Obj. 1 + Verb + Preposition + Obj. 2

75.

76.
Common verbs that take two objects include: 买 (mǎi), 卖 (mài), 送
77. (sòng), 借 (jiè), 还 (huán), 介绍 (jièshào).

187.
把 sentences and
188. complements

189.
Because 把 sentences are all about disposal, and <a href=
190. "complements" class="uri" title="wikilink">complements in
191. Mandarin often handle this issue, it's good to be aware of how
192. these two grammar features interact.

193.
Result
194. complements work particularly well in 把 sentences. When you
195. consider that both structures deal with the result or outcome of an
196. action, this makes sense. The majority of result complements
197. (except for perception verbs) fit in very well in a 把 construction.
198. A couple of examples:

199.

200.

201.
我 把 作业 做 完 了。Wǒ bǎ zuòyè
202. zuò wán le.I finished the
203. homework.

204.
你 把 这 个 汉字 写 错 了。Nǐ bǎ
205. zhège Hànzì xiě cuò le.You wrote this
206. character wrong.

207.

208.

209.
Direction
210. complements also work well in 把 constructions, for similar
211. reasons. For example:

212.

213.

214.
请 把 这些 东西 拿 出来。Qǐng bǎ
215. zhèxiē dōngxi ná chūlái.Please take this
216. stuff out.

217.
我 把 他 推 出去 了。Wǒ bǎ tā
218. tuī chūqù le.I pushed him
219. out.

220.

221.

222.
Note that <a href="potential_complement" title=
223. "wikilink">potential complements do not appear in 把 sentences.
224. This is because they are hypothetical, whereas a 把 sentence must
225. describe what actually happens.

226.
Forming 把 sentences

227.
Negating 把 sentences

229. (past) directly in front of 把. You can't put it after 把, 'inside'
