9.
反而 (fǎn'ér) is used to express "on the contrary" or "in
10. contrast," with 反而 going in the second part of the sentence. Note
11. that the meaning of 反而 goes beyond just "but" and is usually used
12. to explain that something is totally the opposite of what one was
13. expecting.

14.
Standard Structure with 反而

15.
Structure

16.
Normally the first clause above makes a statement, and then the
17. second clause introduces the part that is totally opposite of one's
18. expectations.

19.
The overall structure of sentences that use 反而 is something like
20. this:

21.

22.
Sentence, Subj. + 反而 + ⋯⋯

23.

24.
It's also important to point out that 反而 is not a <a href=
25. "conjunctions" title="wikilink">conjunction; it's an <a href=
26. "adverbs" title="wikilink">adverb. Practically speaking, this
27. means that rather than joining two statements, it goes
28. inside a statement (within the second clause).
29. Specifically, it needs to come after the subject and
30. before the verb. (Note that when you use a conjunction
31. like 但是 it comes before the subject! 反而 is different in
32. this respect. Also, rather than replacing 但是, it can work
33. with it to add emphasis.

34.
Also, sometimes the subject of the second clause will be
35. omitted. If there is a subject, however, 反而 definitely need to come
36. after it.
