  26. Excuse me, you must be a student from China, aren-'t you?
  27. Yes! Your Chinese is so good! Have you been to China?
  28. Not yet, but if I get the chance to I'm sure I'll go visit.
  29. Then you learned all your Chinese here in Washington?
  30. Mm. A few years ago I had a year of Chinese at the University of
  31. California, and since I came to Washington, I've been studying it all
  32. along. But iny level in Chinese still isn't high enough.
  33. Your Chinese is this good and you've never been to China, but I've been
  34. in the States a year already and my English level is still improving
  35. very slowly.
  36. You studied English when you were in China, I suppose?
  37. Sure, I studied it for three and a half years'.
  38. British English?
  39. Yes, and my teachers were all Chinese, so after I left China my biggest
  40. problem was that I couldn't understand people talking and I couldn't
  41. speak. Reading is a lot easier than speaking.
  42. In China, what university were you studying at?
  43. At B.U. B.U. is pretty good for English, but for us students in science
  44. and technology the emphasis is on reading and translating, not on
  45. conversation.

  61. ’’Kějì”? Is that science and technology?
  62. Right. We use a lot of abbreviations, pardon me!
  63. No problem. But there's still something I don't understand.
  64. What?
  65. You often say that science has tvo divisions. One is social science and
  66. the other is natural science.
  67. So does science and technology refer only to the natural sciences?
  68. This Cdistinction! isn't so strict. Especially in modern society, the
  69. natural sciences and the social sciences aren't so clearly separated.
  70. I agree vith that. On questions of categorization, ve have a lot of
  71. ideas that are different from yours.
  72. Oh, here comes the train. I have to get on it. In the future we'll talk
  73. some more if ve get the chance.
  74. All right. Next time we'll talk in English.
  75. Okay, thank you. Good-bye.
  76. Good-bye.
