  123. The prepositional verb 比 is used to compare two things which are different. The two things compared come before and after the prepositional verb 比.

  140. The two things that you compare using 比 need not only be nouns or pronouns. You can compare two actions using verb phrases. For instance, repeat, going by plane is faster than going by train.

  145. In addition to nouns, pronouns, and verb phrases, the two things you can compare using 比 can be full sentences. Repeat, it's more convenient for you to come than for me to go.

  149. You'll remember that when you're describing an action which consists of a verb plus object, the entire action is first stated.

  169. The insertion of 得 or 不 signals a new form of the verb, the potential form.
  170. It's called this because verbs like 回得来回不来 combine the meaning of be able to or can with the original meaning of the verb.
  171. 回得来 can come back,回不来 cannot come back.
  172. Now compare the verb 回不来 with the phrase 不回来 is not coming back.
  173. The different ordering of the syllable 不 signals a different meaning.

  178. Only compound verbs of result can occur in the potential form.
  179. Here's another example.Repeat can go up.
  180. 上得去,上得去.
  181. How would you say cannot go up?

  183. Not all compound verbs are compound verbs of result.
  184. For instance,准备 and计划 are not.
  185. This means they do not occur in the potential form.
  186. You may be asking, how can I tell which compound verbs are compound verbs of result?
  187. Although there is no sure way to tell, there are characteristics you can take note of.
  188. A compound verb of result usually has an action verb in the first syllable,
  189. and the second syllable shows the result of that action.
  190. For instance, repeat can finish doing.
  191. 做得完,做得完.
  192. Repeat cannot finish doing.
  193. 做不完,做不完.
  194. When compound verbs of result are not in the potential form,
  195. they are usually in the completed action form,
  196. that is with the marker 了 or the negative marker 美.
  197. This is called the actual form.
  198. The verb indicates what actually happened.
  199. Repeat, that matter is already finished.
  200. 那件事已經做完了.
  201. And how would you say that matter can't be finished in a day?
  202. 那件事一天做不完.
