Over the years, wider pathways were filled with temporary lean-tos due to overcrowding. This was particularly true during the Cultural Revolution when the population density of the hutongs increased dramatically. Multiple families shared the space previously held by one. Factories were closed as being imperialistic and converted to living quarters. |
