Premier of the People's Republic of China, (1949–76).</font></p>
								<p><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">At the bottom, Deng Xiaoping </font><font size="+1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">邓小平</font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> (Dèng Xiǎopíng, 1904 - 1997) riding in a motorcade October 1, 1984. This is well past the period of the Underground City, but it was included in the photographs on display.</font></p>
								<p><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Deng Xiaoping was First Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China (1975 – 1983). As a member of the leadership of the Communist Party of China, Deng led China towards &quot;socialist&quot; market economics. After Mao Zedong's death, Deng gained control of policy, although not by means of high public office. He exerted control and direction from his position within the CCP (Chinese Commuist Party).</font></p>
