The store was hit during the shelling in 1900, but was quickly rebuilt. </font>
  47. <p><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">It was founded as one of a chain of stores across China by Meng Hongsheng, a descendant of Mengzi. Mengzi, or as we know him, Mencius (孟子 Mèng Zǐ) is one of the early Chinese philosophers from the Spring and Autumn period. He is often compared to Aristotle.</font></p>
  48. <p><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">They sell silks, obviously. But they are famous for wool and satin, as well. The first five star Red flag raised over Tiananmen Square was made of their silk.</font></p>
