  31. Ren Yi is the foremost of the &quot;Four Rens&quot;, the other three being: </font><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><a href="../../SMpainting/images/DrumAndZither/DrumAndZither.html">Ren Xiong</a>, Ren Xun, and Ren Yu. They<br>
  32. were located in Shanghai and were exposed to western influence and new ideas. They were members<br>
  33. of the &quot;Shanghai School&quot; but many of them came from Zhejiang Province as did Ren Yi. This position as<br>
  34. outsiders in Shanghai gave them a greater sensitivity to the effects of imperialism and to the abuses of <br>
  35. the Qing administration. Ren Yi was particularly aware of the disparity of position between the ordinary<br>
  36. man and those in power.</font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br>
