This artist is using his hand and fingernails as the brush.  It is a technique used by Gao Qipei </font><font size="+1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">高其佩</font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> </font><font size="-1" color="white" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">(1660-1734) to gain full mastery over the stroke.  He felt that brushes put too much distance between the artist and his work.
