  727. Completion -le in the sentence above marks completed action but not past
  728. tense. It shows the completion of one action in the sentence in relation
  729. to another hut does not indicate whether that action is past, present,
  730. or future. In the English translation, the time relationship between the
  731. two actions is indicated by the word "when”: "When you have reached the
  732. intersection, then you go to the right." In a more formal style, the
  733. sentence could be translated as ’’Having reached the Intersects you go
  734. to the right."
  735. The adverb sal is used for "then" in commands and suggestions. It
  736. usually indicates the next step in a suggested sequence of actions, as

  753. You have learned two words that may be translated as "then": zài and
  754. Jiù. However, the two words are not used interchangeably. Jiù is used to

  834. is             each -r word as it is introduced in the course of study.
  835. You have already learned the word yìdiǎnr, which is actually pronounced

  837. is added to a syllable that ends with n, the /n/ sound disappears

  839. Although adding -r causes pronunciation changes in most syllables, these

1425. Canting zài zhèr.       The dining room is here.

1428. Zher you canting. There is a dining room nere.
1429. Mài tfingde, "a place to buy candy,” or, more literally, "one that sells
1430. candy”C The noun modified by this phrase has been left off the end of
1431. the phrase. This expression is understood to refer to either the person
1432. who does something or the place where something is done. Mai t_fing.de
1433. could be translated in exchange 11 as "candy seller” or "candy counter””
1434. In some other context it might refer to a "candy store” or a "candy
1435. department." (Notice that the English asks where you can BUY something,
1436. but the Chinese equivalent asks where something is SOLD.)
1437. Xiǎomàibù, "variety shop,” is a small shop inside a building. In a
1438. museum the shop would sell cigarettes, sweet buns, and soda. In a hotel
1439. it would sell a wide variety of goods, including souvenirs, soap,

1473. the movie theater will be on the (your) left, and the market will be on
1474. the (your) right,” It is common for Chinese to assign left and right
1475. from the point of view of the object itself. For instance, the theater

  1477. the market.

1978. Chūqu, "to go out (away from the speaker)”: The verb ehū means "to
1979. go/come out,” ”to exit,¹' in the sense of leaving an area. Chū must be
1980. followed either by the name of the place being left (as in chūle_ shèīge

2001. runs into you downtown may say NĪ yě dao zhèr. l&i le, "You have come

2003. Jiběn: The bound word Ji- means ^(1í)a few.¹¹ It is unstressed and often
2004. toneless. When stressed, Ji- is the question word "how many."

2068. Z<5uzhe_(t) "walking”: When the marker -she is added to an action verb,
2069. the verb form corresponds to the English -Ing. The -zhe puts the focus
2070. on action continuing for some time. Because of this,, -she is called a
  2071. marker of DURATION.
2072. Tā xuězhe xuězhe Jiù bù        He was studying and studying it, and

2075. In the sentence ZBuzhe qù kēyi, the marker -zhe is attached to one verb
2076. (sou) to modify another verb (qù). This indicates that the action of the
2077. verb to which -zhe is added occurs simultaneously with the action of the
2078. verb modified. The action of ’'walking” modifies the action of "going

2093. you can see below that it is used in exchange 5 to refer to a 180-degree
2094. turn. In English we would break up the directions into three steps,

2623. The verb kànjian, "to see," is called a COMPOUND VERB OF RESULT, You
2624. have already learned about compound verbs made up of a verb indicating

2628. expressing the result of that action (Jiàn, "to perceive"). Kànjí an can

2662. "’On what floor do they sell maps?" Or the verb is put into passive

2703. ZSulāng: Originally, this word referred to on open, roofed corridor

2706. Guole zhege zíuláng Jiù shi When you have passed through this canting.
2707.                        corridor, that’s the dining roctn.

2719. The syllable -tou, "end," may be added to a direction word such as hÒu
2720. "back," to change it into a place word, hòutou, "back." One-syllable
2721. direction words like 11 and hòu may be used after wàng, "towards." In
2722. most other situations, you must use a place word made up of the
2723. direction word and an ending such as -bian(r), -tou, or -mian(r).
2724. The syllable -tou does -bian(r) and -mian(r) do, ""’ii       *- if

2730. The syllable -mian(r), "surface," may also be added to a direction word
2731. to make a place word. Notice that while this syllable combines with more

  3189. Notes on No. 1
3190. Shì: This noun has a very abstract meaning that does not translate
3191. easily into English. Some of its commoner translations are "matter,"
3192. "business," "affair,¹* and "thing.¹* You have learned that dōngxī can
3193. also mean "thing." Dcngxī is used to refer to tangible things, while shì
  3194. refers to abstract matters.
3195. When used to answer someone who is asking for help, the question Nī you
3196. shénme shì a? is an offer of help.
