40.

41.

42.
The imperative is the form of the verb used when you are asking/telling someone to do
43. something. As such, it is often referred to as the command form. In English, we often add
44. a "please" to the command form to turn it into a request. In Russian, the presence or
45. absence of <em
46. xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase">пожа́луйста does
47. not determine the difference between a command and a request. That function is performed
48. by something called aspect (imperfective and perfective verbs). More about this later.

49.
Here are the most basic rules for forming the imperative:

176.

177.
Of course, you will find exceptions to this rule, so your best bet will be to simply
178. memorize those imperative forms which you will hear or use most often.

179.
As Russian makes a distinction between the informal <span
180. xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"><em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
181. >ты and the formal/plural <span class="bold"
182. ><em xml:lang="ru"
183. class="foreignphrase">вы, you will need to make that
184. distinction with the imperative forms. The forms shown above are for <span class="bold"
185. ><em xml:lang="ru"
186. class="foreignphrase">вы. To make the <span
187. class="bold"><em xml:lang="ru"
188. class="foreignphrase">ты forms, simply drop the ending
189. -те:

190.

191.
<em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
192. >принеси́

193.
<em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
194. >покажи́

195.
<em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
196. >скажи́

197.
<em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
198. >будь

199.
<em xml:lang="ru" class="foreignphrase"
200. >рабо́тай, etc.

201.

202.
A command/request NOT to do something is made by simply adding <span class="bold"
203. ><em xml:lang="ru"
204. class="foreignphrase">не in front of the imperative.
205. Negative commands are usually formed using imperfective verbs. The imperatives <span
206. class="bold"><em xml:lang="ru"
207. class="foreignphrase">рабо́тай and <span class="bold"
208. ><em xml:lang="ru"
209. class="foreignphrase">чита́й are examples of
210. these.
